The Changing Role of Public Libraries
A For most of the twentieth century, a public library was judged mainly by the size of its book collection. Visitors came to borrow novels, consult reference works and read newspapers in silence. In many towns today, however, the busiest part of the library is no longer the shelves but the open spaces between them.
B Librarians in several countries report that people now visit for reasons that have little to do with books. Students use the free wifi and quiet desks to prepare for exams, job seekers ask for help writing applications, and older residents attend classes on using smartphones. Some libraries even lend musical instruments, sewing machines and gardening tools.
C This shift has not been welcomed by everyone. Critics argue that money spent on cafés and digital equipment would be better used to buy new titles, and that the traditional rule of silence has been lost. Supporters reply that a library which serves only readers will slowly lose public funding, because fewer people will see it as relevant.
D Whatever their view, most observers agree that the library’s greatest strength is that it remains one of the few indoor public spaces where people can stay as long as they like without being expected to spend money.
TRUE: thông tin khớp với bài. FALSE: bài nói ngược lại. NOT GIVEN: bài không nhắc tới, không suy ra được.
In the past, a library’s quality was mostly measured by how many books it owned.
Đoạn 1: "judged mainly by the size of its book collection" = đánh giá chủ yếu bằng số lượng sách.
Job seekers have to pay a small fee for help with their applications.
Everyone agrees that libraries should spend money on cafés.
Đoạn 3: "Critics argue that money spent on cafés … would be better used to buy new titles" → có người phản đối.
Supporters believe libraries that serve only readers may receive less public money in future.
Đoạn 3: "will slowly lose public funding" = nhận ít tiền công hơn.
In most towns, the shelves are still the busiest area of the library.
Đoạn 1: "the busiest part … is no longer the shelves" → ngược với câu hỏi.
Library cafés earn more money than book loans.
Đề (Discuss both views)
Some people think schools should make unpaid community work a compulsory part of every student’s education. Others believe this time should be spent on academic subjects. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Bài mẫu (khoảng 310 từ, tham khảo mức band 7)
In many countries, secondary schools are debating whether volunteering in the local community should become a graduation requirement. While some argue that every school hour should be devoted to academic study, I believe a modest amount of compulsory community work benefits both students and society.
Those who oppose the idea have a reasonable concern. The timetable is already crowded, and teenagers face intense pressure to achieve high marks in competitive examinations. From this perspective, time spent cleaning a park or helping at a care home is time taken away from mathematics or science, subjects that directly influence university admission. Parents may also worry that poorly organised schemes could become little more than free labour for local organisations.
However, community service teaches skills that classrooms rarely develop. A student who helps elderly residents with their shopping, for example, must communicate with people of a different generation, manage time and take responsibility for others. These abilities are increasingly valued by employers, yet they are difficult to learn from textbooks alone. Furthermore, when young people see the problems of their own neighbourhood at first hand, they are more likely to become active citizens as adults, which strengthens the whole community.
The key, in my view, is balance. If schools require a limited commitment, such as two hours a month, and link each activity to clear learning goals, the impact on academic results would be minimal while the personal benefits would be considerable.
In conclusion, although academic study must remain the priority of schooling, a small and well-organised programme of compulsory community work deserves a place in every student’s education.
- Thân 1: quan điểm phản đối, có lý do cụ thể.
- Thân 2: quan điểm ủng hộ + ví dụ (người giúp người già đi chợ).
- Đoạn cân bằng: giải pháp "2 giờ mỗi tháng".
- Kết luận: nhắc lại quan điểm, không thêm ý mới.
🔑 Cụm từ nên học
- a graduation requirement: điều kiện tốt nghiệp
- be devoted to: dành trọn cho
- at first hand: tận mắt, trực tiếp
- active citizens: công dân tích cực
- the impact … would be minimal: ảnh hưởng không đáng kể
Describe a time when you helped someone.
You should say:
- who you helped
- what the problem was
- how you helped this person
and explain how you felt about helping them.
Câu trả lời mẫu (khoảng 1 phút 45 giây)
I’d like to talk about the time I helped my younger cousin, Minh, prepare for his first English speaking test last year. He was in grade seven and he was terrified of speaking in front of the class, because he thought his pronunciation was terrible.
So for about two weeks, we met every evening for twenty minutes. First, I asked him to choose topics he actually enjoyed, like football and video games, so he had something to say. Then we recorded short practice answers on my phone, listened to them together and deleted them straight away, which made him feel much less embarrassed. I also taught him a few simple phrases to buy time, such as "That’s an interesting question".
On the day of the test, he called me afterwards, sounding really excited, and told me the teacher had praised his fluency. Honestly, I felt even prouder than when I pass my own exams, because I could see that his confidence had changed, not just his score. It also made me realise that I might enjoy teaching one day.
💬 Part 3 có thể hỏi
- Why do some people enjoy helping others more than others do?
- Should schools teach children to volunteer?
- Do people help their neighbours less than in the past?
- Listening: cẩn thận "bẫy sửa lời": người nói thường đổi ý ("Tuesday… no, actually Thursday").
